Nipper Programs and Registration

All applications for participation in Holiday Program are due by the 13th December 2017
Swim Assessments are due no later than:
- 1st November 2017 for the Full Program; and

Full Program: Sunday 5th November 2017 to Sunday 18th March 2018 – 10.30am – 12:30pm
This program is best suited for those who wish to enhance their skills over an extended period of time as well as participation in junior competition. Sessions will be held every Sunday morning 10:30am – 12:30pm unless specified in the Nipper Calendar due to competition or other events.
All skill levels are welcome and weekly consecutive participation is encouraged however you are welcome to drop in for sessions as available however you must have sent through your swim assessment prior to participation.
Competition participation is encouraged for all juniors however not mandatory. It is my vision that children will develop the confidence to compete in least one carnival as an individual or team.
In addition to the weekly Sunday sessions, nippers who participate in the full program will automatically be entered in the Holiday Program and complete their surf education certificates. Should your child be unable to participate in the holiday program, 90% attendance at all standard nipper days (full program) is required to meet Surf Ed requirements.
Holiday Program: Wednesday 27th, Thursday 28th and Friday 29th December 2017, Tuesday 2nd January, Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th – between 10.00am – 1.00pm
The holiday program is for those children who wish to keep learning new skills but unfortunately can’t make it down weekly through the summer season. Children will learn essential surf skills and knowledge to meet requirements to obtain their Surf Ed Certificate (100% participation on all days is required).
To allow for children to showcase their developed skills, there will be 2 opportunities for competition throughout the program. The last day of the program (Thursday 4th of January), will be a club carnival where children have the chance to compete against their own age group for points. Should children wish to try out interclub competition, participation in Junior Carnival 2 on Friday the 5th of January is strongly encouraged.
Participating in the holiday program does not exclude your children from continuing on with the extend season should they wish to continue to enhance their skills or compete further.

As always, the Nipper numbers are dependent on the number of qualified adult assistants that we have. For every five Nippers we put in the water, we must have at least one fully qualified group leader/assistant.
Please let us know if you are a Bronze Medallion holder or would like to obtain your Bronze Medallion and assist with our program.
What is an Age Manager?
Age Managers use their experience and passion for youth development to mentor Nippers and facilitate fun learning programs that encourage and develop young surf lifesavers. Their goal is to enrich the lives of Nippers through the delivery of surf lifesaving knowledge and skills in a fun and safe aquatic environment.
- are responsible for the overall safety and wellbeing of their age group
- are responsible for facilitating the development of surf lifesaving skills, e.g., movement and surf awareness skills
- are responsible for facilitating the development of personal skills, e.g., confidence, teamwork, leadership
- assist the Nipper Coordinator to prepare and run lessons for each age group
- remain with the same group throughout the day
To become an Age Group Manager you do not need to hold a bronze medallion however completion of the Age Group Manager award is required (minimum age is 16 years). The award is comprised of an online workbook and short beach activity which will be run at the club prior to the commencement of the Holiday Program.
If you are interested in becoming an Age Group Manager please indicate this on your child’s registration form.
Important Information About Nippers and the Swimming Assessment
Nippers start learning about surf awareness and safety through the SurfEd program. They are also able to participate in board paddling, surfing, swimming, running, wading and other fun activities and games.
Children can join Nippers at any age from U/8 (7yrs) to U/13 (13yrs). Age groups in Surf Life Saving are determined by the age you are on 1st October each year. Please note that children must be a minimum age of 7 years, as of midnight, 30th September to join Nippers.

What to Bring
- Water bottle
- Warm jumper
- Rash vest (available for purchase)
- Wetsuit (there are always cold days and whilst optional, wetsuits are very important for buoyancy and therefore highly recommended)
As outlined above, the Nippers Program is supported by volunteers and includes an instructor/nipper ratio of 1:5 during water based activities.
Parents and carers who are not assisting with beach and water activities help with other aspects of the Nippers Program such as helping in the kitchen, running the sausage sizzle, beach pack-up, rubbish collection etc.
We request that parents inform program leaders of any relevant medical or behavioural condition which their children may have at the time.
We are planning on running the popular Surf Play program on some of the days. Surf Play is only open to school age children with older siblings registered in the Nipper program.
